Digital camera technology has put night photography in the reach of anyone who has a few essential pieces of equipment and the interest to learn some simple camera techniques.
Night photography requires a slow shutter speed, so you will need a camera that can be used in the manual or shutter-priority mode. Even better would be a camera that has a Bulb setting, which means that the shutter will stay open as long as the shutter release button is down.
The camera should also have a manual focus mode. Many times the automatic focus will not function because of the darkness of the scene.
The second piece of equipment is a self-timer on the camera or a remote controller. This is needed to eliminate camera shake caused by depressing the shutter release button manually.
A sturdy tripod is essential to keep the camera steady and prevent blurry images.
Since the image can be seen on the LCD screen, you can experiment with shutter speeds, ISO settings and aperture settings until you get the exposure that you want.
Night photography has never been easier. A little knowledge and patience will reward you with some beautiful, creative images.
